Hey San Diego — This weekend brings Beer City Festival to Mission Bay's waterfront, Lunar New Year celebrations, Mardi Gras events, and Valentine's Day options ranging from sea cave kayaking to desert stargazing. Imperial Beach just got its first community-owned grocery store in years, the Sandcastle Man is still in Coronado, and Volcan Mountain outside Julian offers a quieter alternative to the coastal crowds. With temps in the mid-60s and partly sunny skies all weekend, there's plenty of reason to get out there.
Let’s dive in.

🥾 Hike of the Week: Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve
If you’re ready to trade coastal crowds for cool mountain air, Volcan Mountain, just outside Julian, delivers one of the most underrated summit hikes in San Diego County.
It feels different up here — quieter, cooler, and a little wilder than your typical local loop.
What to know before you go:
Distance: ~5 miles round trip (Five Oaks Trail)
Elevation Gain: ~1,200 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Best time: Morning for crisp air and clear views
Pro tip: Parking is limited — arrive early on weekends
The steady climb is approachable, the forested middle section is a rare treat for San Diego, and the summit payoff gives you that “top of the county” perspective without Cuyamaca-level traffic.
If Sunday’s weather holds steady, this is a perfect excuse to head east and reset.
The Views
La Jolla of course!

❓ San Diego History Trivia Answer
B) Casa de Estudillo
Built in 1827, Casa de Estudillo is the oldest standing residential home in the county. For comparison, the Machado y Stewart House dates to 1835, the Robinson-Rose House to 1853, and the Whaley House - often guessed - was built later in 1857.
