Hey San Diego — It's a big weekend in San Diego. Super Bowl Sunday arrives with no shortage of places to catch the action—rooftop lounges, breweries, and beachfront bars across the county are rolling out drink specials and jumbotron screenings. Meanwhile, Lunar New Year celebrations continue with lion dancing and night markets in Convoy, plus events running through mid-month. And in a story seven decades in the making, 100-year-old Escondido Navy pilot Captain Royce Williams will finally receive the Medal of Honor for a top-secret 1952 dogfight that's only now coming to light. Add chocolate tastings and nearly perfect Sunday weather (75° and sunny), and you've got plenty of reasons to get out there.

Let’s dive in.

🥾Hike of the Week: Potato Chip Rock

One of San Diego’s most iconic photo-op hikes, Potato Chip Rock rewards a steady climb with a jaw-dropping rock formation that looks impossibly thin from the right angle. Perched near the summit of Mt. Woodson, it’s become a rite of passage for locals—and yes, the views are just as good as the photos.

What to know before you go:

  • Distance: ~7.5 miles round trip (Lake Poway route)

  • Elevation Gain: ~2,000 feet

  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous

  • Best time: Early morning (cooler temps + fewer crowds)

  • Pro tip: Weekends get busy—expect a short line for photos by mid-morning

You’ll earn it with a sustained climb, but the sweeping inland views and famous rock payoff make this a classic for a reason. Bring water, good shoes, and a little patience at the top.

❓ San Diego History Trivia Answer

B) Casa de Estudillo

Built in 1827, Casa de Estudillo is the oldest standing residential home in the county. For comparison, the Machado y Stewart House dates to 1835, the Robinson-Rose House to 1853, and the Whaley House - often guessed - was built later in 1857.
