Imagine hiking the legendary Pacific Crest Trail — even just a slice of it — and landing at a rock formation so uncannily eagle-shaped that no imagination is required. That's Eagle Rock, one of San Diego's most rewarding backcountry hikes.

The trail winds through a canopy of oaks alongside Cañada Verde Creek before opening into sweeping grasslands with views of Hot Springs Mountain and the Palomar Observatory dome peeking over the ridge. The payoff: a striking boulder perched on a hillside that genuinely looks like an eagle with wings outstretched.

March is prime time — wildflowers, mild temps, and wide-open skies.

Distance: ~6.5 miles out-and-back Difficulty: Easy Location: Warner Springs (trailhead at 31049 CA-79, across from the Cal Fire station)

Tip: Park on the roadside across from the fire station, not at the station itself. And resist the urge to climb Eagle Rock — it's best admired from the ground.
