San Diego Trivia - Did you know?

Carlsbad, California wasn’t always called that… an early settler renamed it after he made an interesting discovery there in the 1880s. But why Carlsbad?

A) It was named after Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, famous for its underground beauty.
B) It honored a railroad tycoon who helped fund the Pacific Coast line.
C) It was named after a famous European spa town.
D) It was a marketing ploy tied to the Carlsbad Hotel, hoping to attract tourists.

Trivia Answer:

The correct answer is C) β€” Carlsbad took its name after Capt. Frazier, who owned the land, discovered a mineral water well similar to the springs in Karlsbad (now Karlovy Vary) in what’s now the Czech Republic. He bottled and sold the water all across the country but the well was lost during the Great Depression. Rediscovered in the 1990s you can now buy the water at some local stores!
