The Hike of the Week
🥾 Hike of the Week: Navajo Canyon
Looking for a peaceful escape without leaving the city? Navajo Canyon in Allied Gardens offers a quiet, two-mile out-and-back through a surprisingly lush canyon tucked right into the neighborhood. Easy terrain, minimal crowds, and a “wow, I’m still in San Diego?” vibe make it a perfect quick nature fix.
The Local - Places to See
🪨 Secret Spot: Mushroom Caves
I mentioned Annie’s Canyon Trail a couple of weeks ago. Part of the trail includes the Mushroom Caves - a maze of sculpted sandstone walls, narrow passageways, and hidden alcoves that was once a secret local hangout. Here is a virtual hike video from the County of San Diego Communications Office.

Trivia Answer:
The correct answer is C) Pacific Beach.
🌴 When The Duke Hit San Diego – A rescue, a crowd, and a legacy
Hawaiian surf legend Duke Kahanamoku helped spark California’s surf scene with exhibitions in San Diego, often at Pacific Beach. His visits drew crowds, inspired local board-builders, and even included a dramatic rescue of struggling swimmers caught in a rip tide. Tourmaline Surfing Park soon became a hub for early wave-riders and shapers, cementing PB’s place in surf history.
