🤠 A Rodeo, Brazilian Festival & LeucadiART

San Diego is sending August out with a little bit of everything.

The Ramona Rodeo saddles up for its 45th year, Brazilian music, dance and food fill Waterfront Park, and LeucadiART brings around 100 artists to Highway 101. Over at Liberty Station, more than 180 makers gather for the Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair.

Friday is National Red Wine Day, and with the heat continuing inland, we're also sharing an important reminder about two popular backcountry hiking areas that remain closed through the end of August.

Plus, we've rounded up more than 300 live performances, karaoke nights and trivia events happening across San Diego County this weekend.

🤠 Ramona Rodeo - Fri.–Sat., Aug. 28–29

The 45th annual Ramona Rodeo brings two more nights of rodeo action to the Fred Grand Arena, with performances at 7 p.m. followed by live music and dancing at the official afterparties. $

🎨 LeucadiART Walk - Sun., Aug. 30

North County’s largest juried art show takes over Highway 101 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with around 100 artists, live music, art demonstrations, kids activities and beverage gardens spread throughout Leucadia. It’s the 20th annual edition!

🇧🇷 Brazilian Festival - Sat., Aug. 29
Brazilian music, dance, food, capoeira and Carnival culture fill Waterfront Park from 2–11 p.m. as the Brazilian Festival returns to San Diego after a 12-year absence. $

🎨 Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair — Sat.–Sun., Aug. 29–30
More than 180 artisans take over NTC Park at Liberty Station from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. with handmade goods, art, food, live music and activities for all ages.

Friday is National Red Wine Day, and Solare at Liberty Station is celebrating in fitting Italian style with a special Tuscany wine dinner. Winemaker Luigi Pagoni of Poggio del Moro joins the Solare team for five Tuscan wines paired with a four-course dinner featuring wood-grilled Fiorentina steak, plus vegetarian options. $

🌙 Cabrillo Under the Stars - Sat., Aug. 29
Spend an evening atop Cabrillo National Monument with live music, local food and drink tastings, and spectacular nighttime views while supporting the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation. 6:30 to 9 pm. $

🍷 Taste of Gaslamp - Sat., Sept. 12
Explore the Gaslamp Quarter one bite at a time, with participating restaurants serving signature tastes throughout the neighborhood. $

🎶 Adams Avenue Street Fair - Sat.–Sun., Sept. 19–20
One of San Diego’s biggest neighborhood music festivals returns with multiple stages of live music, vendors, food and plenty happening along Adams Avenue.

🍺 La Mesa Oktoberfest - Fri.–Sun., Oct. 2–4
The 53rd annual celebration takes over La Mesa Village with three days of German food, beer gardens, live entertainment, games and Oktoberfest festivities. $

With the summer heat still hanging around, this might be a good weekend to skip San Diego’s more strenuous inland hikes. The San Diego River Gorge and Three Sisters trails are closed through the end of August after dozens of heat-related rescues and assists this summer.

Both are challenging “reverse-grade” hikes, where much of the climbing comes on the return trip — often during the hottest part of the day. If you do head outdoors this weekend, consider an easier coastal walk, start early, carry plenty of water, and know your limits.

Afternoon coastal breezes should help take the edge off the heat. It will be hotter inland with a head warning so be careful out there!

Billy Wilder’s 1959 comedy Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon, used the iconic Hotel del Coronado as the stand-in for a luxurious Florida resort. The Del’s distinctive Victorian architecture and beachfront setting made it a perfect backdrop for the film, which is now considered one of Hollywood’s greatest comedies. More than 65 years later, fans still visit the Coronado landmark to see where Marilyn Monroe and company made movie history.
