San Diego gets a front-row seat to history this Friday as NASA’s Artemis II crew returns from a 600,000-mile journey around the Moon and splashing down just off our coast. Add in a massive car show at Del Mar, a throwback burger stop in Poway, and over 200 live music performances across the county, and you’ve got a weekend that feels uniquely San Diego. Let’s get into it.
Let’s dive in.

The Events
🚀Artemis II Splashes Down Off San Diego Today
Friday, April 10, around 5 pm
History lands in our backyard today. At about 5:07pm, NASA’s Artemis II crew returns to Earth after a 10-day, 600,000-mile trip around the Moon — the first time humans have left Earth orbit since 1972.
Orion splashes into the Pacific off San Diego, where U.S. Navy teams from USS John P. Murtha will recover the four astronauts. If skies are clear, look west around sunset: reentry leaves a streak like a reverse rocket launch, and three 116-ft parachutes slow Orion from 25,000 mph to 17 mph before touchdown.
Want to watch live: NASA’s livestream ‘Artemis II Crew Comes Home’ starts at 3:30pm PST on YouTube.
🎬 San Diego Streaming Film Festival Saturday, April 11, 4–7pm
The Grand | Ritz Theater in Escondido turns into an indie film haven for one night only. This fest spotlights short films and web series made for streaming — the kind of stories that start on your laptop and end up at Sundance. Escondido’s art deco Ritz is the perfect throwback venue to watch the future of film. $$
🚗 25th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals Friday–Sunday, April 10–12, 8am–5pm
Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts 2,500+ pre-1972 hot rods, customs, and classics right on the coast. It’s less “car show” and more “rolling art museum” with live music, pinstriping demos, and vendors. Even if you can’t tell a ’32 Ford from a ’57 Chevy, the chrome alone is worth the walk.
Every headline satisfies an opinion. Except ours.
Remember when the news was about what happened, not how to feel about it? 1440's Daily Digest is bringing that back. Every morning, they sift through 100+ sources to deliver a concise, unbiased briefing — no pundits, no paywalls, no politics. Just the facts, all in five minutes. For free.
The Food
🍔 Hamburger Factory – Poway
A true throwback burger spot tucked into Old Poway Park, where sizzling patties come with a side of Western charm and passing train views. The burgers are amazing from Classic to Maple Bacon Bourbon or Black and Blue think juicy, well-seasoned, and built to hit the spot after a hike or a wander through the farmers market. It’s not trying to be trendy… and that’s exactly why it works.
The Upcoming
🌌 International Dark Sky Week April 13–20
County-wide stargazing, night hikes & workshops from Julian to Mission Trails. Celebrate the same sky Artemis II crossed — Orion splashes down off SD Friday 4/10 at 5:07pm, then look up all week. Full list: darkskysandiego.org. Free.
🚘 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance: “Icons of Speed” April 25–27
Ellen Browning Scripps Park becomes a $100M open-air museum for the 20th anniversary. This year’s Icons of Speed class traces super cars 1935–1996, from the Mormon Meteor to the McLaren F1. Even if you’re not a car person, rare Ferraris on the grass with the Pacific behind them is peak San Diego.
🥾Hike of the Week: Coast Walk Trail 🥾
1 mile | Easy | La Jolla
La Jolla’s worst-kept secret is also one of its best short hikes. The Coast Walk Trail hugs the bluffs above La Jolla Cove, giving you tide pool views, sea lion soundtracks, and Torrey Pines framing the horizon. It’s the same path locals used in the 1890s to walk between cottages before there were streets.
Trailhead: Near The Cave Store, 1325 Coast Blvd
Parking: Street parking on Coast Blvd — get there early.
Watch for: Slippery sandstone after foggy mornings. Keep dogs leashed — sheer drops.

❓ San Diego History Trivia Answer
Answer: B) First U.S. seaplane flight ✈️
On January 26, 1911, aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss lifted his Hydroaeroplane A-1 off San Diego Bay near North Island — the first successful seaplane flight in the U.S. That flight helped earn North Island its nickname as the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation.”
